Yo Happiness comrades! Are you a musician and/or are you in a band?
Happiness is looking for your submissions!
The fourth issue is music-themed and will include a comp music CD - a combo of contemporary/local punk, rock, noise, & electronic. The CD will come with the book, not to be sold separately. We currently have 15 of the 20 needed tracks for the CD, thus we need just FIVE more tracks to complete it. Could one of them be yours?
To submit: answer this post in the next 3 Days with a link to you/your band’s site where one could stream or download the music (ie., a bandcamp or soundcloud page) as well as your preferred contact email.
If we dig your tunes we’ll email you within the next week with more details!

GARDEN OF THE WOMANIMAL : CAROLINE PAQUITA
Opening reception + Zine Launch, Saturday April 12, 2014, 7 - 10pm
Booklyn Artists Alliance, 37 Greenpoint Ave, 4FL. Brooklyn, NY booklyn.org
RSVP on Facebook
The Booklyn Art Gallery is pleased to present GARDEN OF THE WOMANIMAL, an installation by Caroline Paquita and a small survey of thirteen years of drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and zines.
GARDEN OF THE WOMANIMAL explores a recurring theme throughout the recent years of Caroline’s work, depicted in a wide variety of media, a cult of  “womanimals” half-women/half-wild animals are illustrated in landscapes of playful sexual scenarios, mystical adventures, and explorations of nature and the body. The womanimals’ corrupt playfulness and exuberance are contrasted by the meticulously clean line work of Paquita’s drawings and paintings. Newer works are surrounded by thirteen years of imagery demonstrating the evolution towards this theme and its stylized representation.
Culling works from her personal collection GARDEN OF THE WOMANIMALcreates an audacious yet welcoming environment of new and past works including drawings, paintings, screenprints, paper mache, sewn soft sculpture, wood sculpture, Risograph prints and zines. The installation is climaxed by Paquita’s  new artist book, published exclusively for the exhibition, compiling years of screenprints, publishing ephemera, hand-colored Risographs, and drawing reproductions into a beautifully hand-bound hardcover limited edition.
GARDEN OF THE WOMANIMAL is Caroline Paquita’s first solo exhibition in New York. Born in Miami in 1980, Caroline studied creative photography and art history at the University of Florida in Gainesville. In addition to her personal art practice, Caroline is a musician and an independent publisher working under the guise Pegacorn Press. Printing exclusively with Risograph since 2009, she has collaborated with and published work by Al Burian, Anna Haifisch, Brontez Purnell, Mike Taylor, Sy Wagon, and Lale Westvind. Coinciding with the exhibition, Caroline and Booklyn are collaborating on compiling and archiving sixteen years of her self-published zines to be released as a limited edition box-set in May 2014.

Check out the publications from Paquita’s Pegacorn Press if you’re unfamiliar!

Properties of Spearmint

By Diego Gerlach
2014
Diego Gerlach’s world is cohabited by freaks and schlubs who show you that being dirty is not a choice, but an inescapable truth.  Don’t you realize that you are unclean from wallowing in both urban and suburban neighborhoods for far too long?  If not, time to wise up and let Gilso, a sort of junkie Goofy, and Charlindo, a quaff-sporting weakling duck, lead you into inevitable lunacy that seeps with pot smoking law enforcement and a bum serving laced spearmint tea while sheltering a chupacabra.
Gerlach’s frenetic drawings - echoing influences of Disney, Panter, and Sala - successfully push you into claustrophobic compositions that highlight tense relationships between humor and violence.  This comic wants to visually bother you.  Not in a malicious way - no, more like an interruption to make it perfectly known that nothing is right here.  Gerlach has decided that no one really wins: we are all losers, even the best of us.  So you might as well trip, fall, and enjoy your tongue scraping the earth.
Diego Gerlach’s tumblr

For some time I thought about selling zines to people outside Brazil, but shipping costs are ridiculous, always more expensive than the zines themselves.

I’ve tried for some time to submit my stuff to North American publishers - not very successfully. :B I understand it’s probably and overcrowded territory for comics makers, but Ive thought I had to try.

Then I’ve sent a PDF of ‘Properties of Spearmint’ (a rough English translation of one of my latest zines) to Anthony Meloro and got a nice review.

There’s no phisical version of this zine as of yet.

Thanks for yr time, Anthony!

Diego will have a new comic featured in Happiness #4!

sophiafosterdimino:

I made a 7-page comic called “In Camera” for Happiness 3, edited as always by the fabulous Leah Wishnia and up for preorder here.
It should also be debuting at the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival on November 10th - you can grab it at the Collective Stench table, #D12.
This is a massive double issue (180+ pages!) with an insane number of talented artists, including some of my favorites like Zejian Shen, Niv Bavarsky, Renata Gąsiorowska, Inés Estrada, Andy Burkholder and many more.
If you get it, let me know what you think!

Happiness 3 is now available to purchase here instead!
